Aviation Safety

At Australian non-controlled aerodromes, Pilot Activated Lighting (PAL) and Aerodrome Frequency Response Units (AFRU) are essential automated systems used to enhance safety, improve situational awareness, and manage nighttime operations.

Pilot Activated Lighting (PAL)
PAL allows pilots to turn on aerodrome runway and taxiway lights remotely using their aircraft VHF radio.
Aerodrome Frequency Response Unit (AFRU)
An AFRU is a radio-triggered automated voice response system linked to the aerodrome's frequency. It provides pilots with critical situational awareness in areas without Air Traffic Control (ATC).
